RWA tokenization in July 2026: what actually changed
The month DTCC went into production, tokenized equity perps set the volume record, and the Senate shelved the CLARITY Act. Fifteen signals, each with a practitioner read.
As of 2 August 2026
In brief: In July 2026 tokenization split into two markets. DTCC began production tokenized stock and Treasury trades with JPMorgan, BlackRock and Goldman Sachs on 15 July, while JPMorgan's JLTXX tokenized money market fund grew AUM 250% in a month and BNY set out 24/7 Treasury rails. Separately, tokenized equity perpetuals drove RWA trading to a reported $470bn monthly volume, and RWAs became Hyperliquid's largest trading category. The US statute meant to connect the two — the CLARITY Act — was shelved by the Senate on 28 July.
Two things happened in July that are usually described as the same story. Neither is.
Did tokenized settlement actually go into production?
Yes — for the first time, at the market's central counterparty, with the three firms that matter most.
- DTCC, 15 July. First tokenized stock and Treasury production trades involving JPMorgan, BlackRock and Goldman — production, not pilot. The distinction that matters is that DTCC is the incumbent plumbing, not a challenger to it: tokenization arriving inside the CSD means the settlement-finality and transfer-agency questions get answered by the existing legal perimeter rather than around it. JPMorgan tokenized part of its Invesco QQQ holdings held at DTCC; Microsoft, Circle, an S&P 500 ETF and a short-Treasury ETF were among the first assets, settling on Besu or Canton, with Goldman and Vanguard among ~40 participating firms.
- JPMorgan, 6 July. JLTXX tokenized money market fund AUM grows 250% in a month — on a public chain. A bank's own money market fund share class distributed onchain is a collateral play before it is a distribution play; the growth already tracks its use as stablecoin reserve backing. Watch whether it becomes eligible collateral in a cleared context, because that is where the balance-sheet saving actually sits.
- BNY, 23 July. 24/7 rails to eliminate the weekend lag in US Treasuries — the honest version of the T+0 pitch. Not faster settlement of the trade; removal of the funding gap around the weekend, which is where the intraday liquidity cost lives. Note the sequencing: the after-hours test settled un-tokenized Treasuries tied to stablecoin reserves, with tokenized-Treasury testing on a private chain still to come and 24/7 targeted for 2027.
- BIS, 30 July. Global banks test tokenized money for cross-border payments in a ~$1m pilot — the notional is a rounding error. The participant list is the signal: Project Agorá put 28 institutions and five central banks on a shared ledger, settling in ~80 seconds across six currencies.
- Aviva Investors, 30 July. Tokenized fund launched after Central Bank of Ireland approval — an Irish-domiciled approval is the reusable asset here. The precedent travels further than the fund does.
- Cecabank and Crédit Mutuel, 28 July. Join Regulated Layer One as it launches — European bank consortium infrastructure keeps forming around permissioned chains, not public ones. Note the divergence from the JPMorgan approach above.
Where did the RWA volume actually come from?
Not from treasuries. From leverage on tokenized equities.
- 22 July. Tokenized equity perps drive RWA trading to $470bn monthly volume — read the denominator before quoting the number. That is June perpetual-futures notional (up from $85bn in January), not spot settlement value, and a headline that mixes them will be repeated for a year. Binance, Hyperliquid and OKX are 80%+ of it.
- 22 July. Tokenized stocks hit records across every major venue; sector reaches $2.3bn — $2.3bn of assets against $470bn of monthly turnover is the whole story in one ratio.
- 28 July. Robinhood Chain tops Solana in tokenized stock volume via memecoin pairs, after memecoins took over the chain Robinhood built for tokenized stocks on 13 July — the volume is real. The demand it represents is not equity demand: the stock-token turnover is a by-product of memecoins that use tokenized shares as their liquidity pairs.
- 24 July. RWAs become Hyperliquid's largest trading category — 52% of a single week's volume. The category is now defined, at the margin, by a perps venue rather than by an issuer.
- 2 and 7 July. Ondo tokenized BlackRock's IVV and Micron under a US custodial model, then made tokenized stocks eligible as perp collateral. Five days from wrapper to margin. The wrapper is compliant; the use is leverage.
- 30 July. Tokenized gold passes a DeFi stress test, but under 2% is used as collateral — the counterweight to every collateral-mobility deck. The rails work (Aave cleared its largest XAUT liquidation cluster without disruption). The balance sheets have not moved onto them — roughly 1.5% of the tokens' market cap is posted as collateral.
- 1 July. Tokenized Google stock inflated 7,700% in a DeFi lending exploit — and the instructive detail is where it broke. The Chainlink price feed was correct; the attacker manipulated the wrapper conversion rate between the tokenized share and its wrapped form. So the security perimeter of a tokenized equity is the wrapping-and-conversion layer, and that layer sits outside the issuer's control. An underwriting question about a new piece of market plumbing, not a pricing-oracle failure.
What happened to the first listed RWA infrastructure company?
Securitize became the sector's first public mark, and it opened weak.
- 2 July. First to debut shares on NYSE and onchain simultaneously — via a Cantor Equity Partners II merger, with full SECZ shares tokenized on Solana and Avalanche.
- 7 July. Down ~40% after the SPAC debut, despite the tokenization boom — the first time public markets have priced an RWA infrastructure business directly. Read the cause carefully before over-reading the print: the sell-side view (Arca) is that this is SPAC investor-base turnover and a crypto-IPO hangover, not a fundamental re-rating — "no major negative fundamental catalyst." Either way, everyone raising on tokenization narrative now has a comparable.
- 15 and 27 July. A Cantor collaboration on blockchain-based IPOs, then an SEC investment adviser registration — the strategy is to accumulate regulated permissions (it already holds a broker-dealer, ATS, transfer agent and fund-admin arm), not chain throughput. That is the correct read of where the moat is.
- 30 July. Ondo weighs an acquisition worth up to $500m (a $250–500m range, exploratory), with Securitize sitting on a $400m war chest — consolidation starts before the category has settled its standards. Expect regulated permissions and distribution to be what gets bought.
Did the US get a rulebook?
No, on two counts, and the incumbents used the gap.
- 28 July. The Senate shelved the CLARITY Act to prioritise a sanctions bill and nominations, with the fight over restrictions on officials' crypto holdings unresolved and passage odds down to ~30% (Galaxy). Market-structure allocation between the SEC and CFTC stays unresolved into the midterm calendar.
- 18 July. Regulators missed the GENIUS Act's one-year deadline for final stablecoin rules — a statute exists and the rules under it do not, even as the Jan 2027 effective date holds. For a bank's legal function that is a harder problem than no statute at all.
- 13 July. Wall Street transfer agents lobbied the SEC, warning that third-party tokens pose risks to market integrity — the most under-covered item of the month. Transfer agency is the incumbency that tokenization actually threatens, and it is now defending the register through the comment process — one participant in the piece says the plain part quiet: transfer agents are paid by issuers, so if non-issuer tokens win, the franchises shrivel. Whoever owns the authoritative record owns the economics.
What moved outside the US?
The rulebooks that already exist got wider.
- 1 and 8 July. MiCA came fully into force as the final transition window closed, and the European Commission's review immediately looked at expanding it to cover tokenization and non-EU stablecoin issuers. The regime is complete and already being amended — plan for a moving perimeter.
- 27 July. A BNY Mellon unit joined the MiCA register as ESMA added 15 providers — US custodians are taking EU authorisations rather than waiting for US clarity.
- 13–14 July. BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley joined the UK government's tokenization taskforce, the government's Digital Markets Champion published a tokenized-finance roadmap projecting up to a £33bn annual boost (and £14bn in tax) by 2035, and the US and UK moved to align rules.
- 3 July. The IMF said policy choices will determine whether tokenization strengthens or fragments the financial system — fragmentation risk, stated by the institution whose job it is to say so.
What to watch in August
- Whether DTCC widens the named participant set and asset scope beyond the launch cohort, or the October full launch slips.
- Whether the SEC acts on the transfer agents' comment letter — and whether it draws the issuer-sponsored / custodial / synthetic line the STA is asking for.
- Whether the tokenized-equity volume survives a risk-off week, or proves to be leverage that leaves with the funding rate.
- Whether CLARITY returns before the calendar closes, and what the SEC does under existing authority if it does not.
